From the Fjords to the Mountains

In the Viking Age Bygstad was a thriving village by Dalsfjorden. The fjord was the main route, and merchants and travelers sailed in from the sea. Legends tell that Olav Tryggvason himself found his way into the fjord, and powerful families once held sway at Ålhus, influencing the village.

Osen farm

Along the route between fjord and mountain lay Osen, one of the oldest farms in the area, with traces of settlement going back several thousand years. People from near and far met here — for assemblies, trade and conversation. The farm became a natural hub where news was shared and bonds were formed, and it still stands as a witness to a living rural community in constant motion.

Through the Middle Ages the village continued to grow, shaped by life around the land, the fjord and the river. At the same time the community gained a new focal point — a place where people gathered in both everyday life and celebration.

Bygstad Old Church

The old churchyard still faces the landscape, marked by calm and history. A church has stood here since the Middle Ages, and in 1845 a new church was built on the same site. Generations have gathered here — in sorrow and joy — and gravestones, trees and moss-covered stones tell of lives that have left their mark on the village through the ages.

In the 19th century new impulses reached the village. Schools, trade and steamships connected Bygstad more closely to the outside world. Traffic increased, and the village grew into a place where people met, moved on — or chose to stay.
