Fjords, Waterfalls and Mountains

Between fjord and mountain in Sunnfjord lies a landscape shaped by natural forces and people over thousands of years. Along the river Gaula the story connects villages and people — from the fjord in the west, across waterfalls, to the mountains in the east.

Join a time-travel through Gaular, from the first Vikings who sailed into Dalsfjorden to today's travelers moving between mountains, waterfalls and fjords.

The story of Gaular begins...

...by the fjord and Bygstad

Between fjord and mountain, where Dalsfjorden cuts into the land, lies Bygstad — a village with deep roots and rich tales. People have lived and traveled here since the Viking Age, shaped by the forces of nature and community. The story of Bygstad is a journey from old legends to modern times, where history still lives in the village's spirit.

...along the waterfall route to Sande

On the banks of the Gaula, where the river winds toward Dalsfjorden, lies Sande — a village shaped by water, land and the people who settled here. Over time it has been an important meeting point for travel both south and north along the historic Trondheim postal road and a hub for traffic between fjord and mountain. Paths and roads crossed here, and the village grew into a natural gathering place between steep slopes and the rushing rapids of the Gaula.

...and to Viksdalen and the mountains.

Between high peaks and green slopes, where the river Gaula runs clear and cold, lies Viksdalen — a village with long roots and a living community. Its history reaches back to the Viking Age, when travelers found their way through the valley and laid the foundations for the settlements that still shape the area today.

Story coming in 2027
